For Northern New Jersey and tri-state NFL fans of the Jets and Giants, it's been a hectic offseason.

In fact, the past two years have been filled with turmoil and change for both teams. The Jets have a new GM (Joe Douglas), head coach (Adam Gase), and prized free-agent running back (Le'Veon Bell).

Meanwhile, the Giants are still adjusting to second-year coach Pat Shurmur and second-year player, RB Saquon Barkley. Not to mention, they have to figure out how to manage 15-year veteran Eli Manning and No. 6 draft pick Daniel Jones in the quarterback role.

Training camp officially gets underway on July 24, but for NJ sports betting fans, now is the time to get into game shape for the 2019 season.

For many NJ books and bettors alike, this will be the first full season of NFL action. Most sportsbooks in New Jersey were launching temp books and ramping up operations in the second half of 2018 following the overturn of PASPA.

So, as the NFL season approaches, let's take a closer look at the 10 sportsbooks that have set up shop in NJ, starting with the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands.

Initial impressions of FanDuel Sportsbook at Meadowlands

Address: 1 Racetrack Drive, East Rutherford, 07073

FanDuel Sportsbook is located on the backside of the Meadowlands racetrack, adjacent to MetLife Stadium and part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford.

Taking exit 16W from the NJ Turnpike is just the first step in getting to the location. It's abit of a maze to wind past the football stadium then head toward the backside of the Meadowlands horse track, but GoogleMaps can help get you through the series of service roads that lead to FanDuel's retail sportsbook.

There is a valet parking option as well as plenty of handicapped and free spaces available (as long as it's not a MetLife event date; more on that later).

The FanDuel Sportsbook location was born from a renovation of the Meadowlands racetrack clubhouse, so each FanDuel piece has been remodeled from an existing space. There are common areas shared with live and simulcast horse-racing bettors.

The first people to greet you at the entrance are third-party security guards to wand you down before you can proceed into the facility. Slightly unnerving, but you will also see uniformed state troopers positioned at various points of the facility.

It begs the question, after seeing the security presence, should I feel safer or less safe? I will take the positive approach to think it's great to have an armed state trooper on-site to escort me to my car after I cash a huge 15-team parlay.

The layout

FanDuel Sportsbook has three separate areas:

  • Primary location (ground floor) is the largest space of the three areas. This houses the largest TV screens, the majority of the live and self-service tellers, a large bar area, and a restaurant.
  • Auxiliary ground floor (location adjacent to horse-racing simulcast center) is a smaller 'no-frills' space with full-service bar plus live and self-serve tellers.
  • Upstairs location (second floor), which also includes horse-racing simulcasting interspersed with tellers for sports and horse racing. The seating areas overlook the large format TV screens of the primary sportsbook location on the ground floor.

Amenities at FanDuel Sportsbook

Tellers

There are a combined 30 live tellers booths across the locations with 21 in the primary location, four in the auxiliary space and five upstairs.

RATING: 5 stars

Self-betting kiosks

FanDuel has an abundance of kiosks throughout the venue with 17 in the primary location, 14 in the auxiliary space and 17 upstairs. They also have two horse-racing, self-serve machines in the primary ground floor location.

RATING: 5 stars

Minimum sportsbook bet amount

While bettors on the FanDuel Sportsbook app can play parlays as low as a 10-cent base, there's a $5 minimum for any teller or kiosk bet made at FanDuel's retail location.

Also, as is custom with NJ retail sportsbooks, glasses and hats must be removed before making any wager with a live teller or at a kiosk.

RATING: 2.5 stars

TV screens

There are 30+ large screens in the primary sportsbook area and 10 large screens in the auxiliary location showing current live sports.

The primary location also features a scrolling digital board with scores, stats, lines, and injury updates. The upstairs location has much smaller TV screens featuring a mix of sports and horse-racing feeds.

RATING: 5 stars

Seating availability

While the primary location is the largest of the three spaces, there isn't an ideal ratio of seats to TV screens. There are 20+ seats around the bar, but otherwise, you will have to stand.

The Victory Restaurant (interior pictured below) has 40 tables, with seating for 120+.

There are TV screens within the space, but the configuration of the venue obstructs the view of the giant TV screens at the front of the sportsbook.

We think the auxiliary ground floor location (shown below) is the best place to grab a seat and watch sports.

Fanduel Location New Jersey

Combined with the bar area, there are 50 seats. But every seat has an unobstructed view of the TV screens and odds boards.

The second level has a hodgepodge of 15 wooden tables with seating and 20+ seats that apparently were made just before Niatross won the Meadowlands Pace in 1980.

Also, unless you are seated up against the railing, you will have only a partial view of the giant screens on the ground floor.

RATING: 4 stars

Reserved seating

Reserved seating is not available in any of the spaces or even at the Victory Sports Bar. There is a small 'VIP area' cordoned off in the corner of the primary location, but no entry unless you are betting a total of $150,000 every 30 days.

It's unclear if the VIP area can be reserved in advance.

RATING: N/A

Food/drink availability

Each of the three spaces at FanDuel Sportsbook Meadowlands has a full bar. All are 'self-serve' with no waiter/waitress service. The aforementioned Victory Sports Bar in the primary location has a full menu and 40 tables of seating.

The ground floor concourse features a slew of stadium concessions (hot dogs, popcorn, pizza, etc), but any food purchased here can't be brought into the primary location.

The auxiliary area does not offer any food options in the space, but you can bring your concourse food/drink purchase into the space. The upstairs has limited concession food options, but all can also be enjoyed at your table or chair.

RATING: 4 stars

Staffing/customer service support

FanDuel Meadowlands is well staffed with tellers, plus managers and supervisors. All are clearly identified by their name badge and FanDuel ID. There is no shortage of people around to assist. It's interesting to note that there was not a single location set up or employee(s) engaged to push the FanDuel app signups or deposits.

RATING: 5 stars

Parking and accessibility

As the FanDuel Sportsbook is part of an existing complex, they are also beholden to the events that take place in and around the venue.

Fanduel Location Nj

During Meadowlands horse-racing events, parking is free. While it might be harder to find a space, there's no cost impact to the FanDuel sports bettor.

On Giants/Jets game days, the FanDuel sports bettor will need to pay the going rate for parking to access the sportsbook. A look at the 2019 calendar shows three 'open' Sundays with no Jets or Giants game scheduled: Sept 22, Oct 27 and Nov 17.

On the other NFL game days, the combination of cost to park, size of crowds, and traffic in and out of the complex present significant challenges in making FanDuel a 'go-to' venue to watch football.

RATING: 4 stars non-game days, 1 star NFL game days

Nearby amenities

If you are a sports bettor that likes to play the horses or vice versa, the FanDuel Meadowlands sportsbook is a great place to spend some time. The sports betting area shows sports and the horse racing simulcast area shows races, with very little overlap.

If you crave casino action, there is nothing available nearby and the closest casinos are both out of state. Resorts World in Jamaica, NY (28 miles) and the Wind Creek in Bethlehem, PA (85 miles).

And if you want to visit an Atlantic City casino, that's 130 miles south of the Meadowlands.

RATING: 4 stars

My FanDuel football bet

Of course, when visiting the 10 sportsbooks in New Jersey, it makes sense to place a little football wager before the season begins.

Not playing as big of a stake, as say Gov. Phil Murphy, but here's my future wager on the Philadelphia Eagles to win the NFC East at the FanDuel minimum of $5:

Overall score: 4.1 stars

FanDuel Sportsbook just celebrated its first birthday on July 14. The FanDuel Meadowlands location has done an outstanding job of remodeling and breathing new life into a once-moribund facility.

While there are some perceived drawbacks in that the sportsbook is not one contiguous, contained space, a $5 per bet minimum, and NFL game day parking and access.

But all told, FanDuel provides plenty of places and options to watch and bet on sports.

Two more sports betting apps are live in New Jersey, including FanDuel Sportsbook (Download the apps on iOS & Android).

FanDuel Sportsboook was the fourth option for online betting in the state, joining the market a month after DraftKings Sportsbook opened it. The online/mobile product acts as a complement to the FanDuel-branded retail sportsbook at The Meadowlands.FanDuel's web-based, Android and iOS platforms appeared on Saturday, serving up NJ sports betting to computers and smartphones throughout the state. By regulation, access is initially limited to a small group of customers during a five-day soft launch.

Also on Saturday, William Hill went live with its sports betting app in the state. William Hill already provided sports betting services for the retail operations at both Monmouth Park and Ocean Resort Casino.

FanDuel Sportsbook makes its debut

At a glance, FanDuel Sportsbook is a polished and market-ready product that should have no problem competing in the space.

FanDuel Group created the platform, first with its own team before borrowing on the resources of new owner Paddy Power Betfair and then using the technology of international gaming giant IGT. The large European bookmaker acquired the company in a nine-figure transaction this summer. The group likely could have rushed its app to market sooner, but speed wasn't the primary goal.

Head of Product Nik Bonaddio told Legal Sports Report that his team didn't want to simply ‘slap a logo' on an off-the-shelf platform. 'We were never going to do that,' he said. 'That's not in our DNA … we really wanted to make this a much more native experience.'

The attention to detail shows, with the platform mimicking the look and feel of the FanDuel DFS client. Both use the same blue/white color palette, navigation structure and overall styling.

Although FanDuel has a lot of control, Bonaddio repeatedly stressed the benefits of operating under PPB's umbrella.

Meadowlands

'We're partnered with one of the most respected brands in Europe, if not the most respected. That gives us a lot of operational [advantages] — whether its efficient pricing, whether it's the breadth of markets, it gives us more credibility in the space.'

All of these things are important, but how does the product itself stack up?

FanDuel Sportsbook vs. DraftKings Sportsbook

Like their respective daily fantasy sports products, the sports betting platforms from DraftKings and FanDuel share plenty of features.

Starting from the top, both use a customized, rotating carousel to display featured bets. These might be markets that the operator wants to promote, those with the highest volume, or those suited to an individual's DFS and betting habits. Both will allow customers to share funds across products, though the feature is not available on FanDuel SportsBook at launch. Both allow bets as small as $0.10.

They both offer a comprehensive selection of props and in-play bets, too. FanDuel Sportsbook appears to be slightly more granular on the props side, while DraftKings Sportsbook offers deeper in-play options. Both book action on every point in a tennis match, for example, but only DraftKings offers pitch-by-pitch baseball betting.

Fanduel Sportsbook New Jersey Address

The 'cash out' feature included in DraftKings Sportsbook will be incorporated into the FanDuel Sportbook platform going forward, too, though it is not yet live. The system essentially turns every bet into an in-play bet, allowing customers to collect an adjusted payout before the result is decided.

Similarities aside, the two products diverge in some noteworthy ways.

Similar but different

Live-scoring visualizations embedded into the desktop platform represent the shiniest FanDuel-exclusive feature. As data technology has grown more robust, these gamecasts have become a legitimate way to 'watch' a game without actually watching the game. Soccer visualizations, for example, draw a line for every pass in real time.

FanDuel is also taking a more conservative approach to the sports and contests it books. Remember when DraftKings said it was eager to offer things like competitive eating on its sportsbook? Out of an abundance of caution, FanDuel will distance itself from those types of markets.

'If there's even any chance of someone thinking an event might be fixed,' Bonaddio said, 'we're probably going to stay away from it. We'll sacrifice some volume to ensure the consumer protections are there.'

This abstinence might even extend to some mainstream sports. The lower divisions of professional tennis, for example, are rife with corruption, making them potential stay-away material.

You won't find esports, either. FanDuel Sportsbook may offer the market at some point, but Bonaddio said the group is taking a wait-and-see approach with esports betting. 'That audience trends overwhelmingly under 18,' he cautioned. 'Call it a hard lesson we learned in 2015, but consumer trust and protection is everything.'

You will find teasers, though, which allow bettors to buy a looser line for a reduced payout. These bets are popular with casual gamblers, and DraftKings Sportsbook doesn't yet offer them.

Another notable difference: FanDuel Sportsbook lines are visible outside of New Jersey. DraftKings Sportsbook shields them behind the geofence, but FanDuel lets non-NJ customers do everything on the platform except bet.

How do those lines look, though?

What to expect for pricing

It should be noted that folks were initially unhappy with FanDuel's retail pricing at The Meadowlands. Lines on opening weekend were borderline insulting, and a couple of logistical hiccups compounded the criticism.

Bonaddio was unafraid to address the situation, though he chose his words carefully:

It should be noted that folks were initially unhappy with FanDuel's retail pricing at The Meadowlands. Lines on opening weekend were borderline insulting, and a couple of logistical hiccups compounded the criticism.

Bonaddio was unafraid to address the situation, though he chose his words carefully:

'The false starts we had at Meadowlands, frankly, they were a little bit embarrassing for us. That wasn't necessarily due to any technical issues. But when you're starting in a new space, there can be some miscommunications. We didn't intentionally set crappy lines.'

He went on to say that FanDuel Sportsbook plans to be 'extremely competitive' in NJ, though it will be hard to compete with offshore markets in the short term. Once again, the PPB backing could give FanDuel some advantages.

'Paddy Power has a world-class trading team behind it. If you look at the margins that Paddy Power has, the revenue they do on a lesser scale means that their trading department is as good as it gets. All of this runs off the same platforms that Paddy Power itself runs off of. You will see us having, if not the most efficient lines, among them.'

Prices at opening look to be very strong for NJ, including NFL lines at -110 and MLB lines generally between 15 and 25 cents. According to Bonaddio, interest will partially dictate FanDuel's margins going forward.

'We can be a lot more efficient around a higher-volume [game],' he said.

Shop, shop around

In addition to the eight retail sportsbooks, punters in NJ now have five options for betting from their couch:

Fanduel States Legal

  • DraftKings Sportsbook
  • playMGM
  • FanDuel Sportsbook
  • William Hill

Given the emerging choices, it's important for bettors to shop around for the sportsbook that suits their individual needs. Each operator has its own approach to pricing, so lines will vary from one to the next.

For serious, high-volume bettors, the right sportsbook will almost always be the one that deals the tightest numbers. Those who make their living from betting on sports demand the sharpest lines and the narrowest margins for operators. A few tenths of a percentage point can make or break their long-term livelihood.

That being said, the sharpest sportsbook isn't the right sportsbook for every bettor, either.

Many new and casual bettors will be less concerned with the difference between -110 and -115 and more concerned with the experience they're getting. There's something to be said for betting and fantasy sports-ing with the same account, and many DFS customers will stay on-platform by default.

FanDuel's efforts to cater to the casual bettor are evident, meshing with the group's overall strategy for sports gaming. A number of its new DFS features were designed with the same audience in mind.

Is this the right recipe to capitalize on sports betting expansion in the US? We're about to find out.

Will Hill launches, too

The FanDuel Sportsbook launch was expected, but William Hill snuck its app onto the market right around the same time. An e-mail to customers offered early access to a small group during this soft-launch period.

At the time of writing, the NJ product is available on Android only. William Hill's existing Nevada sports betting product added an 'NV' to its title earlier in the week, the first indication that this launch might be imminent. Expect the iOS app to follow soon.

William Hill has been especially busy on the retail side, operating sportsbooks in every state with legal sports betting. Nowadays, though, a competitive mobile platform is all but mandatory for providers who intend to keep pace in the market.
